Earthquake Day 2015

Jan 17, 2015

On January 12, 2010, a strong earthquake hit the tiny country of Haiti, instantly devastating many areas.   Though we were not directly affected by loss of lives or damage to property here in the city of Port-de-Paix, many of our students had family and friends in and around the worst hit areas.

Five years later, the students of Sonlight Academy participated in a memorial service held at SonCenter.  Mr. Brad put together a video of images that reminded us what happened on that day and the days that followed.  Miss Baradina, a student at the time of the earthquake, led us in singing songs that reminded us of God’s power, grace, and ultimate plan, all of which should cast out fear.   The junior girls sang a special song titled, “I Will Rise,” reminding us that Jesus’ sacrifice makes it possible for us to rise from the rubble and despair of this world and find comfort in God.

Mr. Rob wrapped up the service with devotion thought on God as our father.  He told a story about a time when his son fell down and asked why his dad made it happen, as many people did with God the father after the earthquake.  Rob pointed out that while he did not cause his son to fall, he was there to pick him, carry him inside, doctor his wounds, and celebrate with him when he was healed.  The same is true with God; He is there to help us heal after tragedy.  We at Sonlight remember our friends and community who are hurting during this time and pray for the continued rebuilding efforts (both physically and spiritually).
